![]() New York has one of the highest homeless rates in the country. It was disturbing seeing this and then discussing it with the local business owners who saw it as problematic. I became homeless shortly after witnessing a rapid increase of homeless people in Allentown. Those with substance abuse issues have even more difficulty crawling out of this abyss. These are individuals who have been released from prison, or who are mentally and physically challenged. ![]() Some however are in the fringes, and getting out of homelessness is quite difficult if not impossible unless they are helped. Many of these people are professionally trained and more than willing and able to work. However, there are people who are homeless by various events that have placed them in a homeless state. Granted some people are homeless by their intent as they will not or cannot have any local assistance given to them. 1.7% of our population and 74,178 ( Endhomelessness) in New York State on any given day. The homeless rate was 582,462 in 2022 ( Stastica) approx. The US has one of the highest homeless rates of any modern country. I spoke with many social workers and attorneys who tend to homeless matters and they all say in unison “The System is Broken.” It’s not the workers but the system. The problem is not with the workers and administration, the problem is with the government both local, state, and federal. They are just doing what the system is requesting. However, blame is not to be pointed to the motels, shelters, and workers. Bed bugs, stained bedding, and just unsuitable filthy conditions, to name a few. Many will end up in shelters and some will end up at motels that have seen better days and, in many cases, are just plain awful. Many are just waiting to be called to be helped for a place to sleep… to get out of the cold and to be served a hot meal. Now I am out of that endless loop and the fog has lifted.Īs I sit in Area B of the county building (Homelessness Placement), I see familiar faces from Allentown and elsewhere. My friend said she could not believe what I gave away. I was homeless for about 8-10 weeks, with a 4-year lead-in of self destructing my life slowly. Then I moved to a nice place next to Kleinhans and saw the sudden rise in homeless people and was fascinated at how this was happening in this amazing country. I was working, and helping to care for her, but it was too late. I believe I let all my success and money slip away after tending to my mother who was aging into her 90s and was mishandled by a local hospital. ![]() Am at an old friend’s place in Canada which has snapped me out of my fog. Just left my Department of Social Services (DSS) motel.
